to go further Organisation United StatesAmericas Below are the most notable incidents regarding threats to press freedom in the US during the week of February 26 – March 4: Hope Hicks’ resignation leaves reporters questioning their future relationship with the President White House Communications Director Hope Hicks resigned on February 28, a day after she testified before the House Intelligence Committee and admitted to telling “white lies” for President Trump during her closed-door testimony on February 27 with the House Intelligence Committee as part of the panel’s Russia investigation. Hicks was one of Trump’s closest advisers and acted as a major point-of-contact for journalists seeking meetings with him, often arranging interviews without consulting the rest of the White House press operation. Washington Post reporter Josh Dawsey and Bloomberg reporter Josh Green recounted on Twitter situations when Hicks went behind-the-scenes to help them schedule interviews with Trump. Dawsey tweeted insight into his relationship with Hicks on February 28.With all of the changes to the White House’s communications team since Trump was elected President, the relationship between each Press Secretary and the press pool, particularly during briefings, has been tumultuous and overtly hostile. Most recently, Sarah Huckabee Sanders stated that the media “put[s] national security at risk.”Producer claims E! fired her for releasing a clip criticizing the networkE! Producer Aileen Gram-Moreno claimed she was fired for failing to censor an interview during this year’s Golden Globes red carpet event in which actress Eva Longoria criticized the network’s treatment of former “E! News” host Catt Sadler. The former host left the channel after she discovered that she was making significantly less money than her male counterpart, Jason Kennedy. Gram-Moreno filed a complaint with the Employment Opportunity Commission on March 2, alleging she was instructed to flag any mention of Sadler, Time’s Up, or #MeToo before any of the interviews she conducted went on air. Because of the high volume of interviews being recorded, she argues she was unable to fully review each interview — including Longoria’s — prior to it being approved for airing. Adam Stotsky, president of E! Entertainment, stated that the network did not try to censor any of the interviews and that he let go of Gram-Moreno due to a “pattern of poor performance.” Yet Gram-Moreno’s attorney Katherine Atkinson responded to Stotsky’s remarks claiming the network never once mentioned their disapproval toward her performance in her 12 years at E!, and described her dismissal as “a convenient excuse for covering up attempts to silence women speaking out.” This come months after reports on sexual harassment and the #MeToo movement have revealed the lengths to which powerful accused figures will go to silence the stories of women reporting abuse to media outlets, through the use of legal pressure, powerful public relations teams, and the individual harassment of sources and journalists.Nevada Supreme Court overturns ruling that violated two media outlets’ First Amendment rights while reporting on victims of Las Vegas shootingOn February 27, Nevada Supreme Court Justice Kristina Pickering overturned a district court ruling that ordered the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Associated Press (AP) to destroy or return to police their copies of an October 2017 Las Vegas shooting victim’s autopsy report on the ground that it violated the First Amendment. District Court Judge Richard Scotti’s February 9 ruling, in favor of the wife of slain police officer Charles Hartfield, ordered Las Vegas Review-Journal and AP to destroy and refrain from publishing any details from their copies of the victim’s autopsy report. This is one of 58 autopsy reports released in January on the victims from the Las Vegas mass shooting, which both news outlets had sued to acquire. Because none of these reports included identifying details other than the victims’ gender, the news outlets could not find Hartfield’s report to destroy after Scotti’s ruling. Scotti suggested they allow government employees into their newsrooms to go through their records in order to find and destroy Hartfield’s reports.Review-Journal Managing Editor Glenn Cook told the Freedom of the Press Foundation: “If anywhere in this country, agents of any government entity were allowed to force their way into a newsroom to rifle through documents and seek out a specific record and destroy it, it would be an unparalleled violation of the press freedoms enshrined in the First Amendment.” The United States ranks 43rd out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2017 World Press Freedom Index after falling 2 places in the last year. October 10, 2016 / Evansville, Indiana – Over the weekend, Republican Vanderburgh County 1st District Commissioner candidate Sean Selby participated in the 95th Annual West Side Nut Club Fall Festival Parade whose grand marshal was Evansville Olympic two-time gold medal winning swimmer, Lilly King. Over the past week, he also spent every day of the Fall Festival interacting with voters and talking about the issues important to them.Selby commented, “We received a very positive response at the Fall Festival to our platform on bettering roads, keeping taxes low, reducing restrictive regulations, opposing annexation that results in land grabs, encouraging entrepreneurship and attracting businesses that create jobs, and more.”Specifically regarding keeping taxes low, at a recent United Neighborhoods of Evansville candidate forum, Selby spoke out against a proposal to raise property taxes by relaxing the property tax homestead exemption rate from 8% to 6% and by annually by 2% until completely gone. “Numerous Vanderburgh County residents have serious concerns that the Evansville City Council will vote today to increase their property taxes by relaxing the homestead exemption and I equally share in those concerns.”With USA Today reporting that nearly 7 in 10 Americans have less than $1,000 in savings, some residents have even said they would eventually be unable to endure these projected annual 2% increases if passed and may be forced to consider moving to other counties. “When we look at multiple economic indicators, we realize that it is an especially bad idea to consider repealing this exemption of the homesteads in Vanderburgh County residents at this time. Furthermore, many are frustrated that Evansville will be able to outnumber the county voters who have spoken so clearly on this issue. So, I have called on individual city council members to reconsider this course of action today and hopefully they will.”Later today, the Evansville City Council is slated to meet and may attempt to relax part of the property tax homestead exemption, which will lead to a tax increase of all Vanderburgh County residents for their homestead.FacebookTwitterCopy LinkEmail

London, United Kingdom | AFP | Paul Pogba has called on Manchester United to “wake up” after a third straight draw over the Christmas period saw them slip behind Chelsea in the Premier League table.Draws against Leicester and Burnley either side of Christmas severely undermined United’s status as challengers to Manchester City and Saturday’s 0-0 stalemate at home to Southampton means they are now third in the standings, 15 points adrift of City. The problems are mounting for manager Jose Mourinho, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s knee problem keeping him out for a month and Romelu Lukaku taken off on a stretcher after a nasty clash of heads with Wesley Hoedt.Wing-back Ashley Young will miss United’s next three matches following his acceptance of a violent conduct charge after he appeared to elbow Dusan Tadic during Saturday’s stalemate.Everton are United’s next opponents at Goodison Park on New Year’s Day and Pogba has demanded better from his side, despite the short turnaround. “We didn’t lose but we have to wake up, bounce back and get back to winning,” the Frenchman told MUTV.“We drew again. Three draws, we have to win, something has to change and we have to change to win.“It’s only one day and then we have to play against Everton — that’s football. Tomorrow’s another day and we have to go out there and win.”On the injury to topscorer Lukaku, Pogba said: “When we have Romelu, he makes it difficult for defenders and creates so much space as well. He’s a big miss for us but we have the team to fill the gap of Romelu.”Medical staff took every precaution in treating a potentially concerning head injury, placing the Belgian on a stretcher and fitting an oxygen mask.By full-time Mourinho was confident the worst-case scenarios had been ruled out and was instead predicting a two-match lay-off for the forward.Share on: WhatsApp

By Muriel J. SmithWith surprise election results in both Atlantic Highlands and Highlands last week, administrators in both communities are confident the newcomers will work well with their governing bodies and continue to represent the people they have been elected to serve as the outgoing council members have always done.Atlantic Highlands Administrator Adam Hubeny said Randi LeGrice, who defeated incumbent Councilman Jack Archibald in his bid for mayor, has already been in borough hall to become acclimated to her new position and to learn what appointments must be made when the governing body reorganizes in January. LeGrice also told The Two River Times she is eager to assume the office next year and is looking for ward to working with the borough council. She sets encouraging new businesses to come to some of the vacant stores along First Avenue as one of her priorities after she assumes office.Although defeated in his mayoral bid, Archibald remains a member of the council until 2017. Lou Fligor, whom Archibald defeated in the GOP primary in June, also remains a member of council until 2017. The pair, along with Peter Doyle and Jake Hoffman make up the GOP majority on council, with the newly elected Democrats Charles ‘Chuck’ Lero and Councilman Roy Dellosso the Democrats. Under the borough’s form of government, the mayor only votes to break a tie. Incumbent Robert Sutton, whose term runs out the end of this year, did not seek re-election.Hubeny said in spite of the contentious atmosphere during the pre-election campaigning, “all of the candidates will always do what they feel has to be done for the borough once they are elected. They will do right for the community for certain. I am confident there will be a smooth transition.” The administrator pointed out that “it’s the mayor and council who do the work here; and there is always a learning curve when we have reorganization. However, I’ve been administrator for 11 years, and Dwayne Harris has been borough clerk for 12 years, and we, as all the borough staff, are always here to help.” LeGrice agreed, praising the borough staff for their efficiency and their dedication to the borough. The mayor-elect said she believes the door-to-door campaigning she and the council candidates did attribute to their victory, saying they knocked on 5,000 doors and introduced themselves as well as having the opportunity to hear from the residents what they want and what is important for them to see in the borough. She conceded that the last minute letter sent by GOP mayor Fred Rast urging residents to vote for the Democratic candidates also helped the Democratic victory but thought listening to the people in their homes was the strongest reason for the victories. In Highlands, Borough Administrator Tim Hill said he too is confident of a smooth transition when incumbents Tara Ryan-Killeen and Kevin Redmond step down in January, and newcomers Claudette D’Arrigo and Carolyn Broullon join Mayor Frank Nolan and council members Doug Card and Rebecca Kane. The borough is governed under the Faulkner Act for non-partisan government that formerly held their elections in May but now are held in November. All three incumbents are registered Democrats as is Broullon; D’Arrigo is a registered Independent for other than municipal elections.Although the council-elect women did not run together as a team, they both indicated they share similar visions and ideas for the borough and improving code enforcement and the appearance of the borough are high priorities. D’Arrigo has attended every council meeting except 11 over the past seven years and is also in the forefront in an ongoing battle with FEMA over Super Storm Sandy funds.
Declaration: David Coppedge is on the board of directors of Illustra Media.(Visited 1,002 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Now that DVDs are disappearing, Illustra Media has decided to put most of its high-quality material online without cost, supported by donations and subscriptions.Few Christian film producers can match the quality of Illustra Media. For twenty years, its production team, with funds only a fraction of those available to big name studios, has produced hit after hit in the fields of apologetics and Biblical inspiration. These films are universally praised by Christian leaders for their quality and content.Later this year, Illustra will be launching a site devoted to its intelligent-design films – films that have changed the world and re-invigorated the debate about evolution vs design. Over 8 million copies of Unlocking the Mystery of Life, translated into Mandarin, have been carried into mainland China; some 20 other translations are also circulating across continents. Many CEH readers will be familiar with that classic, as well as The Privileged Planet, Darwin’s Dilemma and most recently, Origin. Illustra’s “Design of Life” collection, featuring Metamorphosis, Flight: The Genius of Birds, and Living Waters, have matched the production quality of top nature documentaries such as those produced by PBS, NOVA, and National Geographic. The only difference is the world view: instead of slavish devotion to Darwinian evolution, Illustra’s films put intelligent design back in the game. With thought-provoking content, exceptional visuals and animations, and rich original music, these films are ‘evergreen’—forever satisfying to watch.Today, Illustra’s inspirational film division, La Mirada Films, has officially launched in a new website called “The John 10:10 Project” (john1010project.com). Producer Lad Allen explains the name:The content of this new website is based on a promise Jesus made in the Gospel of John: “I have come that you might have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). This “abundant life” has nothing to do with material wealth, power or fame. Instead, Jesus offered something far more valuable—a personal relationship with the Creator of the universe, and with it forgiveness, joy, compassion and the “peace that surpasses all understanding,” regardless of how difficult our circumstances may be.TO SEE ILLUSTRA’S EXCEPTIONAL PRODUCTION QUALITY, WATCH THE OPENING TRAILER HERE!Fans of the intelligent design documentaries may not be aware that La Mirada Films has, since 1997, produced 11 full-length films that have “focused on content vital to a satisfying, consistent walk with God” – a more abundant life:The Case for a Creator with Lee Strobel: the legal journalist’s journey out of atheism based on scientific evidenceThe Case for Christ with Lee Strobel: Lee’s transformation from atheist to Christian upon examining the evidenceThe Case for Faith with Lee Strobel: how to deal with the toughest questions Christians face about evil and sufferingProphecies of the Passion: how the Old Testament predicted exact details of Christ’s death and resurrection. The Exodus Revealed: an examination of the physical and archaeological evidence for Moses and the Israelites’ journey out of EgyptDoes God Exist? Multi-angle live recording of a debate between apologist William Lane Craig and the late atheist Christopher HitchensThe Power of Prayer – amazing true stories of answered prayerHeaven and Hell – what the Bible says about the two choices facing us in eternityThe End Times – an exploration of Bible prophecies of the last daysAmazing Grace – enduring true stories behind five classic hymnsKing of Creation – orchestrated hymns, Scripture, and nature photography combined into 8 peace-generating episodesTo make this content more appealing for modern viewers who cannot often endure or afford more than a few minutes to watch something, the films have been divided into short episodes ranging from 4 to 12 minutes each. That way, anyone can link to short, targeted episodes and post them on Facebook, Twitter or other social media platforms and share the content with friends. New material will be regularly added to the site, to supplement the 48 modules already available. The currently-posted video episodes are organized into the following subject categories in the “Videos” drop-down menu:Evidence for Faith (9 episodes)Prophecies and Promises (10 episodes)The Power of Prayer (5 episodes)Inspiration and Devotion (7 episodes)Fuel for the Journey (5 episodes)Facing Evil and Suffering (5 episodes)Reaching the World (4 episodes)Awesome Wonder (3 episodes from the Design of Life series)Additional episodes from the films, including rarely-seen footage from Bonus Features on certain DVDs, will be added each month. Illustra also hopes to produce brand new content as resources permit.Today marks a turning point. In the YouTube and Vimeo age, everyone knows that DVD sales are dropping fast. Viewers are impatient. They expect to see what they want when they want it, where they want it – on their smartphone, tablet, home computer or internet TV. Few are willing to pay for content, even high-quality original material. For a production company whose mission is to get these films seen by the widest possible audience, the change is an opportunity. On the ‘glass half empty’ side, a decline in hardcopy sales means a potential major drop in income for Illustra. But on the ‘glass half full’ side, the films can now be multiplied to reach a much larger global audience. People can link to and share this content at the touch of a few keystrokes, and watch it anywhere, without being tied to a DVD player.Illustra Media / La Mirada Films is trusting God that viewers will seize these opportunities, become a part of the “web outreach team” and spread these films as far as possible. They believe that, in turn, more who are able will support Illustra financially so that the team can keep making films like these.Give it a try! It couldn’t be easier. Browse the rich content on this site, find an episode you’d like to share, and click the ‘paper airplane’ icon to post it on Facebook or wherever your friends hang out. Prayerfully consider what role you might play in using the John 10:10 Project to spread the healing message of Christ to a lost world. Try this one.
