first_imgAddThis Share CONTACT: Mike Cinelli PHONE: (713)831-4794E-MAIL: [email protected] CHALLENGES OF TEACHING FOCUS OF SCHOOL REFORM INSTITUTEPROGRAMThe intellectual and ethicalchallenges of teaching at the K-12 level will be the focus of a three-dayprogram featuring national educators in the Rice Memorial Center (RMC) at RiceUniversity.On Monday, July 20, at 8 a.m., the “Reforming Schools InstituteII” will begin with breakfast in the Grand Hall of the RMC. Bill Ayers,co-founder of the Annenberg Challenge in Chicago and professor of education andSenior University Scholar at the University of Illinois-Chicago, will deliverthe keynote address. The title of his talk is “The REAL Basics: Intellectual andEthical Challenges of Teaching.”Other national participants on the institute’s program scheduleinclude Pedro Burmudez, educational specialist with the Miami-Dade County PublicSchools; Judy Cunningham, principal of the South Lake Middle School in Irvine,CA.; Paula Howard, principal of the Fulton Academy of Geographic and LifeSciences, a K-5 American School of Reform, in Pittsburgh, PA.; and Lois Jones,principal of Oceania High School in Pacifica, CA., a school linked closely withthe Coalition of Essential Schools.All national visitors are affiliated with the AnnenbergNational Institute of School Reform. Representatives from local schools willfacilitate workshops and panel discussions. The “Reforming Schools Institute II” is sponsored by theHouston Annenberg Challenge, the Rice University Center for Education, and theCoalition of Essential Schools. In keeping with the mission of the HoustonAnnenberg Challenge, the institute’s main focus will be on teacherdevelopment.A complete list of the institute’s events will be available atMonday’s breakfast.###last_img
