FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Francois Kellerman is the Southland Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. The Islanders (11-1, 0-0 SLC) extended their winning streak to 11 matches, picking up three wins at the UL Lafayette Invitational this past weekend. Corpus Christi squeezed out three close victories at the tournament, defeating East Carolina 4-3, Tennessee Tech 4-2 and the host team 4-3. The 11-1 start is the best in program history. The Islanders next hit the court today at 2 p.m. CT at UTRGV. This is the second consecutive weekly award for Corpus Christi after sophomore Thomas Rodrigues won the honor last week. Kellerman notched crucial points at the top flight in singles and doubles competition to provide Texas A&M-Corpus Christi with an undefeated weekend. Opening the UL Lafayette Invitational at the No. 1 singles slot against East Carolina’s Vlad Anghel, the freshman recorded a 7-5, 6-1 win en route to the Islanders one point dual match victory. The pair of Kellerman and his brother Okkie at No. 1 doubles went 2-0 on the weekend with a 7-6 (7-5) win over ECU and a 6-3 victory over the Ragin’ Cajuns. Francois Kellerman also picked up a 6-4, 6-3 defeat against UL’s Arthur Libaud at No. 2 singles on Saturday. Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on at least 25 percent of ballots.
