first_imgOpen Week was slightly disrupted with some unusual wet June weather; it usually rains for the entire week, whereas Tuesdays Ladies Open, sponsored very kindly by Con Boyce of the Golf Shop, was played in particularly nice sunshine for most of the day.The winner with 33 points and proud owner of a lovely new golf bag was Eileen Keating. 2nd Catherine Cooke-Harkin 33 points B.O.T. Gross Tracy Spence 21 Gross Points B.O.T. 3rd Elaine Russell 33 points B.O.T. Visitor Noreen Allen Bundoran Golf Club 29 points. Front 9 Ruth Daly. Back 9 Siobhan Wherity.Have you taken up the sport of golf in recent years. In fact, you may be playing golf many years and are a little rusty on some of the basic rules and etiquette. For example, did you know you should not leave your bag or trolley in front of the green while you putt. Or, that you should wait until you are at the next tee before marking cards. These are some of the reasons why slow play ensues and people in groups coming behind you, are getting frustrated with your slow play. Slow play is all very well, if that is what you enjoy, but holding the rest of the course and everyone coming behind you to ransom is not okay, There will be a short informal discussion on etiquette, rules and handicaps in the golf club on Thursday 5th July. Everyone is urged to come along. Tracy Spence is our I.L.G.U. Rules Official and will be giving a short talk on some of the basic mistakes we tend to make.Commiserations to Team Captain Mary Ellen McNulty and the Miele Team who were defeated by Dunfanaghy by one hole after the home team, Dunfanaghy won on the 20th hole in the play off holes. Good luck to our friends in Dunfanaghy who are always so hospitable to visitors, in their next round. The Maura O’Donnell competition is still live for us, so please make sure your name is on the panel. The next round of the Club Mixed Foursomes, very kindly sponsored once again this year by McDonalds Restaurant, must be completed by the 22nd July. Also, a new event has just been added to our fixtures. There will be an OPEN Mixed Foursomes on the 13th July. Book online to reserve your tee time. Next Tuesday, 3rd July, is the July Medal and like me you are probably shaking your head in disbelief at the passage of time! Please make sure your name is in the draw. If you are a Facebook user, there is a Letterkenny Golf Club Ladies forum for our members.Golf Knowledge and Rules.A question from one of our gents this week. His ball, following his tee shot, broke into pieces and part of it landed out of bounds. What is the ruling?Answer:If a ball breaks into pieces as a result of a stroke, the stroke is cancelled and the player replays without penalty, as near as possible at the spot where the original ball was played under rule 5.3. It doesn’t make any difference where the pieces of the ball end up.
