(AP Photo)HIGHLIGHTSVirat Kohli’s 95-ball 123 went in vain as India lost the 3rd ODI to Australia by 32 runsChasing 314, India managed 281 after Dhawan, Rohit, Rayudu and Dhoni floppedIndia, however, still lead the 5-match ODI series 2-1Virat Kohli’s 41st hundred and one of his finest went in vain as India lost the third ODI to Australia by 32 runs in Ranchi on Tuesday. Chasing 314, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni failed but Kohli kept India in the hunt with his 8th hundred against Australia. India now lead the five-match series 2-1.But when Adam Zampa snared Kohli for a 95-ball 123, the writing was on the wall for India. Vijay Shankar and Ravindra Jadeja faced a huge ask when they got together in the 38th over – India needed 95 off 12.3 overs. Australia bowled brilliantly around Kohli’s hundred like they did in Nagpur. Faced with a steep chase in Ranchi, India failed to cross the line in the absence of any other major contribution.Dhawan’s poor run of form continued at the JSCA Stadium and he is now a proper concern for India. They are sure to try out KL Rahul in the fourth ODI but time is running out. Rohit Shara was dismissed cheaply yet again while Rayudu looked clueless against Pat Cummins and lost his off stump.INDIA VS AUSTRALIA 3RD ODI RANCHI: HIGHLIGHTSMS Dhoni, who was in sublime touch in Australia, walked out to bat at No.5 and was involved in a 59-run stand with Kohli. But the problem was Dhoni’s strike rate; he managed only 26 off 42 with the asking rate climbing steeply. When he got out in the 20th over, India slipped to 86 for 4.However, Kohli was batting on a different level. He made batting look ridiculously easy and accelerated after bringing up his fifty. He hit 16 boundaries and his only six came after he had crossed 100. He ran hard and kept Australia under pressure; they heaved a sigh of relief when Zampa got rid of Kohli with a googly.advertisementVijay Shankar tried to take India close – with Jadeja, he added 32 runs for the 7th wicket but that was not going to be enough. The wily Nathan Lyon dismissed Shankar for 32 and there was little hope left for India at 251 for 7.This was only India’s third ODI defeat in 11 ODIs this year but the management would be worried with the batting. Dhawan is out of form and they still cannot trust Rayudu to stick around with Kohli to consolidate in the middle overs. In complete contrast, Australia batted beautifully. Skipper Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja added 193 for the opening wicket and only a spirited bowling performance from India kept Australia to 313 off their 50 overs.Finch was unlucky to fall for 93 but Khawaja went on to score his maiden ODI hundred.Cameos from Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Alex Carey ensured India had to chase a total in excess of 300.India and Australia will now travel to Mohali for the fourth ODI to be played on Sunday. Also Read | This man has made it a joke: Mohammad Kaif after Virat Kohli’s 41st ODI hundredAlso Read | Virat Kohli 4th Indian captain after Azharuddin, Ganguly, Dhoni to score 4000 ODI runsAlso Read | Team India’s tribute to Pulwama martyrs touches Sachin Tendulkar’s heartAlso Read | MS Dhoni mesmerises Ranchi crowd with smart glovework to dismiss Glenn MaxwellAlso Read | Team India wears special caps vs Australia as tribute to Pulwama martyrsFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
