Mali UN condemns attack on peacekeepers in Kidal

In a statement issued today, the 15-member Council underlined “that attacks targeting peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.”“[The Council] called on the Government of Mali to swiftly investigate these attacks and bring the perpetrators to justice,” added the statement.Six other peacekeepers serving with the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) were also injured in the attacks that occurred between 5 and 7 August in Mali northern region, Kidal.Reaffirming that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, the Council members reiterated that any such acts are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed. The members of the Council also expressed concern at the security situation in the country and noted that the full implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali as well as intensification of efforts to overcome asymmetric threats can contribute to improving the security situation across the West African country.Separately, in a statement issued by his spokesperson’s office yesterday, Mr. Ban stressed that such attacks against MINUSMA will not weaken the determination of the Mission to fully implement its mandate in support of the efforts of the Government, the parties to the peace agreement, and the people of Mali to achieve lasting peace and stability. Recalling that the primary responsibility for peace lies with the Malian parties, “[Mr. Ban urged] them to continue to work to fully implement the provisions of the peace agreement and to do all they can to prevent such attacks,” added the statement.Members of the Security Council joined the Secretary-General in extending condolences to the family of the victim as well as to the Government of Chad and to MINUSMA. They also wished a speedy and full recovery to the injured. The Council members also reiterated their support for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Mali, Mahamat Saleh Annadif, and for MINUSMA to assist the national authorities and the Malian people in their efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to their country, including through the mission’s support to the implementation of the Agreement.
